Mardia A. Shands is the Sr. Director of Human Resources for Miami Valley Gaming. She was born in Liberia, West Africa and in 1983 her family immigrated to the United States due to political instability in Liberia. She attended Jr. and Sr. high schools in Cincinnati and received her undergraduate degree in Economics and her graduate degree in Labor and Employment Relations from the University of Cincinnati. She holds the Senior Professional in Human Resources designation from the Human Resources Certification Institute.
Ms. Shands is an accomplished leader in the Greater Cincinnati business community. She is a member of Class 39 of Leadership Cincinnati, an academy of business leaders convened annually by the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber of Commerce. She has been recognized by the Cincinnati Business Courier as a Forty Under 40 business leader and the YWCA of Cincinnati as a Rising Star. She served on the board of trustees for the Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio and currently serves as the Chair of the Workforce Investment Board for Butler, Warren and Clermont Counties. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the YWCA of Dayton, LifeSpan, and the University of Cincinnati ADVANCE student organization. Ms. Shands volunteers her time serving on the HR Committee for the United Way of Greater Cincinnati and was appointed by the Fairfield City Council to serve on the Design Review Committee for the City of Fairfield.
Ms. Shands chairs the Social Action Committee for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Cincinnati Alumnae Chapter, a role she has held since 2011. In that capacity she directs the sorority’s social action agenda and initiatives.
Ms. Shands resides in West Chester, Ohio with her husband Ronnie and their three sons.
