The Future of New Mexico Schools, Teach for America NM
Join Dr. Gwen Perea Warniment, Deputy Secretary of Teaching, Learning and Assessment at NM Public Education Department and Apollonia Gallegos, Senior Managing Director of Experiences at Teach For America to discuss insights and opportunities for collaboration on recruiting the next generation of educators.
Teacher shortages were a given across the country before COVID-19, and it is unclear what the lasting impact on teacher recruitment will be. Where will the next group of educators come from? Research conducted with Generation Z shows that few see education as a viable career path. In Northern New Mexico, a recent report from the LANL Foundation showed that only 3% of high school seniors on their way to college were planning to major in education.
We all have a role to play in changing this narrative and collaborating to recruit great teachers into the profession. Teach For America New Mexico and the LANL Foundation invite you to explore collaboration strategies, innovative ideas, and pockets of hope in the landscape for recruiting new teachers. We will discuss:
What strategies are currently working to attract and recruit Gen Z into teaching?
How can we use targeted, experiential cultivation strategies to collaborate rather than compete to recruit the next generation of teachers?
What are successful models for recruiting teachers here and elsewhere?
